The Better Thing

Focus Scriptures: Luke 10:38 - 42, Psalm 16:11
Everyday I wake up I have two choices. One is to choose to spend time with Him before giving my attention to anything else. The other is to completely forsake that time and give in to all the things that may seem, keyword seem, more important. Choosing the latter is making the decision to allow the busyness to be my driving factor for that day, which always leaves me exhausted and frustrated. But choosing the first leaves me satisfied and better than I was the day before. I choose the better thing. I choose to sit.
In the book of Luke we see Jesus and his disciples being invited by a woman named Martha to her home. Her intent, a very kind and hospitable one, was to provide a big dinner for them. So they went and she got to work. However, there was another woman there by the name of Mary. This was Martha's sister. Mary decided to sit at the feet of Jesus and listen to what He had to say. She wasn't going to let this opportunity pass her by. She wasn't going to be distracted or caught up doing anything else. Jesus was there and she wanted to just be with Him. One was caught up in busyness, the other caught up in His presence.
Martha tells Jesus to tell Mary to basically get up and be busy with her. But Jesus, being Jesus, uses it as an opportunity to teach Her what really matters...Him.
Our lives are full of distractions everyday. We're hit with the daily tasks of our lives. So many different things vying for our time and attention. And that's not a necessarily a bad thing. It's not bad to take care of our families or be there for friends. But just like in the story, Jesus tells Martha that Mary has discovered what really matters. What really makes a difference in her life. Him. He desires time spent with us not so much for His benefit, though He loves it. It's because He knows we need it. He knows we need time to sit with Him to receive all that we need. We need Him.
And it looks differently for all of us. A mama with littles will most likely be sitting at His feet while feeding her babies, or having toddlers climbing all over her. I've been there. Feeding my son or daughter in one arm while worshiping Him with the other. But Jesus welcomes and desires that. What could be a better thing to show your precious children than what it is to sit at His feet?
Peace is found when we sit at His feet. Fullness of joy is found in His presence. Overwhelming love is found in His presence. Strength is in His presence. He is everything we need. Don't let the opportunity to sit with Him pass you by. Choose to sit. It's in the sitting that changes us and restores us. Choose the better thing. If you never have it's not too late to start. As Jesus said to Martha that day, " There is only one thing worth being concerned about, Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her."
As always,
Be Pretty, Be You
You are so loved
